Gold Coast & Hinterland Museum Historical Society

The Gold Coast & Hinterland Museum Historical Society offers a grounded look at how the region developed, from First Peoples and early European settlement through to the modern Gold Coast. Set on a 1.7-acre site in Elliott Street, Surfers Paradise, the museum is run entirely by volunteers and brings together buildings, machinery, photographs, books, maps and other historical material. Its purpose is not just to display objects, but to preserve local stories and make the collection available as an educational resource.

The grounds are best explored as a collection of distinct heritage spaces. The Engine Room contains two original steam engines from the Johnston and Freeman Sawmill, which once operated in Nind Street, Southport. Veivers Cottage is a replica of the home associated with early timber-getter Robert Veivers and offers a sense of life for some of the Gold Coast’s first European settlers. Another particularly distinctive building is the Vincent Sheldon Art Studio, constructed by the local artist and etcher in his Broadbeach backyard in 1940 before being moved to the museum.

Inside the John Elliott Building, displays cover aspects of the Gold Coast’s changing identity, including the old cable station and the city’s famous meter maids. The building also houses historical photographs, books and maps. Dolan’s Barn focuses on the pioneering era, with historical tools and machinery, as well as a 1925 Ford Model T. The collection also includes a Thomas Edison Fireside phonograph, donated to the museum and described by the museum as its oldest music-recording device. These exhibits give visitors plenty of small, tangible connections to the region’s working, domestic and cultural past.

The museum also acknowledges the much longer Indigenous history of the site. Its material discusses the Kombumerri people and the area’s significance as a gathering place, while the museum’s objectives include preserving and interpreting artefacts and evidence relating to local Indigenous culture and the botanical and human use of the site. That makes this a worthwhile stop for visitors wanting more context than the Gold Coast’s resort image usually provides. It suits solo visitors who enjoy taking their time with local history, families looking for an educational outing, and groups interested in booking an event. The volunteer-run setting has a personal, community-minded feel, with indoor exhibits, museum grounds and space described by the museum as suitable for a picnic or meeting friends for a cuppa.
